Secure Logo

The phpPhobos/Stargate website has been configured to only accept HTTPS connections due to recent revelations concerning secret service around the globe spying on all connections to create metadata.
The only protection for us - humble citizens on this planet - is to provide the secret services so many data to de-crypt that it won't make a difference anymore.
As a little add-on, this site will allow only high grade encryption ciphers, and especially those known to not allow Man in the M...

Have upgraded the base OS of the Server to 14.04 LTS to avoid having upgrading it all too often. Apart from some little things that needed fixing, it went well. Still don't understand why Ubuntu keeps using ash as sh shell... Also don't try changing it on the fly. dpkg absolutely hates it

New server online

Shuttle

Stargate has been cross-migrated to a new and faster hardware. In the same process, the OS has been updated and the software used to deliver mail changed from cyrus to dovecot. As a goodie, all security protocols have been enhanced again, and dynamic blacklisting is even more sensitive than it was before - as SMTP auth probing is now taken into account.
The hardware specs are as follow:

  • CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770T CPU @ 2.50GHz
  • 16GB Ram
  • 1x60GB SSD for the ...

Dynamic Blacklisting updated

As script-kiddies from around the world are so keen to probe for any type of existing software etc., I decided to enhance the currently running blacklisting system a little.
Until now, people probing non existing pages on this server had 3 attempts before being blocked by the websites software (put into a quarantine access). However, as soon as they continued probing from the same IP Address - they were locked out hard by the firewall which checks the system on a regular base for adding new...

Linux Hardware

Had always wanted to have a remote site I can do tests with. This whish has been granted by EDIS.
It took a little bit, as I had sent the package in just before the Christmas holidays - but it is up and running now. Even the Monitoring is now active - Monitored from this own site: RemPI Monitoring.

UPDATE: Not 24 Hours only,...

Amazingly bad Apple support

iPod Touch 4G

Apple support, IOS 6, and knowledge ...
Last Week-End, I thought that I could finally upgrate my iPod 4G to IOS 6.0.1, thinking that most bugs, network WiFi etc. had been finally fixed.
Doing the upgrade, everything worked fine. Everything synced as planned, iPod restarted and - No network ! I had the network Sign up in the left corner, but no possibility to actually connect to the IP on the iPod or do any test from the iPod to another device.
Calling Apple support because they do...

My QNap running 24/7 anyway - I wondered why I wouldn't install a virtualbox headless runing a WindowXP License I had laying around from an old laptop... Thinking about it though, the QNap is running a busy-box based mini linux, which in no way would run any virtualbox installation.
The answer to that was actually to chroot a mini-debian, mount the device, proc, sys file systems through a bind option, and that was all that was to be done for getting a virtualbox instance running on the NAS...

2 Outages in the last 2 weeks ...

Well - the first one was due to a scheduled Road-Work where I was advised that the power would be disable for 4 hours. What I did not predict though was that the UPS that was running here for some years now wouldn't last for more than 3 Minutes making me order a new one - which I have installed today. And this means, another outage. The new UPS though has a display showing the power-state and details on the battery, and hopefully I will be able, in the future, to predict when the battery has to...

Servers

it took some time to actually get the Furniture for our (my wife and mine) office, and since it came last week, I couldn't push back the fact that I needed to move the server from it's old (non design) Rack, to a new one I am partly responsible for.
For the sake of Administration, I did put in a KVM, and mounted a screen outside on the Rack, and even added a space for the keyboard, making it look pretty cool in the end. I just hope I won't get a temperature problem, as it's all in...

Network connection flaky

Linux Hardware

Seems the French Telecom and Free Telecom play the ping pong game. France Telecom says the physical line is Ok, and I tell Free Telecom the line is not OK and they see it too. According to this picture, the quiality is really really bad. If I have 15 minutes of connectivity without disconnects, I am lucky at the moment.
No chance in playing any online based game at all. Especially during this Week-End.

Issues have been fixed end of February - at last. Actually - whe...
